Reflections from our Director of Curriculum & Programs time at the National Association of Music Merchants
Darnel Butler
I wanted to take a moment to share reflections from my recent experience attending the NAMM Show (National Association of Music Merchants) in Anaheim, California, where I spent last weekend immersed in an incredible environment of learning, innovation, and global connection.
NAMM brought together individuals and organizations from all over the world, and I had the opportunity to network with educators, nonprofit leaders, artists, manufacturers, and creative innovators who are all deeply invested in the future of the arts.
One of the most impactful aspects of the experience was connecting with members of the nonprofit sector who, like us, are committed to providing meaningful and accessible arts education to students in diverse communities across the globe. Hearing their stories, challenges, and successes reaffirmed the importance of the work we do and the power of collaboration in shaping creative futures.
Throughout the weekend, I also had the privilege of meeting and learning from incredible artists who are actively working in music, performance, and creative technology. These conversations provided insight into current industry trends and how professional artists are adapting to an ever-evolving creative landscape—knowledge that is invaluable as we prepare students for real-world creative careers.
In addition, NAMM showcased an impressive array of new and emerging technologies designed to enhance music and arts education. From innovative instruments and production tools to cutting-edge software and instructional platforms, I was able to explore resources that have the potential to significantly elevate the learning experience for our students. These tools open new doors for creativity, collaboration, and accessibility in the classroom and beyond.
Overall, the experience was an inspiring reminder of how interconnected the global arts community truly is. NAMM was not just a conference—it was a powerful gathering of visionaries who believe in using creativity, technology, and education to build stronger futures for students for generations to come. I am energized by what I learned and excited about the possibilities ahead as we continue to grow, innovate, and expand opportunities for young creatives.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we move forward with renewed inspiration and global perspective.
Warm regards,
Darnel Butler

Bringing “America the Beautiful”
to Life— in Hologram Form
We recently received a call asking if we could assemble a group of students to perform “America the Beautiful” — but not just any version. The vision was to honor the original harmonies in the first chorus, then reimagine the piece with a completely unique interpretation the second time through.
Of course, we said yes.
With just one rehearsal and about ninety minutes to build the entire arrangement, our Young Creators Alliance students rose to the challenge in a big way. They walked into WEDU Studios and delivered a powerful performance that exceeded every expectation. While the filming took place at WEDU, the project was fully produced by DEC Productions.
And here’s the incredible part — the performance was captured to be transformed into holograms, which will play every hour, on the hour, throughout the Florida State Fair.
This is exactly the kind of real-world, high-level opportunity that defines the YCA experience. We are so proud of how our students showed up focused, prepared, and confident, and absolutely rose to a last-minute challenge.
This is growth. This is preparation. This is YCA.
7th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Ceremony
Some of our Young Creators Alliance students were honored to perform at the 7th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Ceremony on Thursday, January 22, held at the University of South Florida.
Each year, students across Pinellas County are recognized for their commitment to community service, volunteerism, civil rights, and perseverance in the face of challenges. The evening featured powerful reflections on Dr. King’s life and legacy, along with awards celebrating students who are carrying his vision forward.
The ceremony also included a keynote presentation by Dr. Sheron Brown, Director of Education & Youth Opportunities for the City of St. Petersburg.
Our student performers included:
T’aja – Dance
Dorian – Dance
Elijah – Poetry
Adrienne – Vocals
Phoebe – Vocals
Jayla – Live Painting
We are incredibly proud of our students for sharing their artistry in honor of Dr. King’s enduring legacy.

Grateful to Chief Holloway, Mayor Welch,
and St. Petersburg for Their Support
On behalf of Arts Conservatory for Teens, we extend our sincere gratitude to Chief Anthony Holloway, Mayor Ken Welch, and the City of St. Petersburg, Florida for this special grant made possible through asset forfeiture funds.
We are honored to be one of the 43 local community programs supported through this initiative—transforming resources taken from crime into meaningful investments in education, prevention, and opportunity for our youth. This funding will help us continue providing high-quality arts education that empowers teens, builds confidence, and creates positive pathways for the future.
We are thankful to be part of a community that believes in reinvesting in its young people.
